The research landscape for H₂ in animals

Canine: a wound-healing study and an oxidative-injury model
The most directly relevant canine study is the 2021 Qi paper in Veterinary Sciences.[9] Eight circular skin wounds were created on each of the experimental dogs, with the dogs drinking either hydrogen-rich water or distilled water three times daily. The HRW group showed faster healing, more blood vessels in the granulation tissue, lower markers of oxidative damage, and higher antioxidant activity. The authors concluded that "HRW is a safe and effective veterinary clinical treatment for dog skin wound healing." It is the first veterinary research-based study of HRW in dogs, and it is small (a preclinical model rather than a clinical trial), but it is published in a peer-reviewed journal and the methods are sound.
The 2017 Zhao study in Journal of Veterinary Research looked at a different canine oxidative-injury model: dogs intentionally poisoned with onion powder to induce hemolytic anemia. Subcutaneous hydrogen injection reduced Heinz body counts, reduced hemolysis, and improved bone-marrow hematopoietic capacity.[10] The mechanism is the same — hydrogen reducing oxidative damage to red blood cell membranes — and the result is consistent with the broader literature on H₂ and oxidative stress.
A separate 2020 study used a hydrogen-rich preservation solution in a canine lung-transplant model and found reduced ischemia-reperfusion injury — better oxygenation, less tissue damage, fewer apoptotic cells — in the H₂ group.[14] That's a more specialized context, but it's a third independent canine study from three different research groups, all pointing in the same direction.
Feline: almost nothing direct
The honest summary: as of 2026, there are no published randomized controlled trials of molecular hydrogen in cats. Feline oxidative-stress research is well established (see the 2013 Castillo paper[13]), but the H₂-specific feline evidence base is essentially absent. This is one of the reasons we recommend starting with a low dose and talking to your veterinarian, especially for cats with chronic conditions or who are on prescription medication.
Equine: the most developed animal model
Thoroughbred racehorses have driven a small but consistent body of H₂ research. The 2013 Tsubone study in the Journal of Equine Science gave hydrogen-rich water via nasogastric tube to treadmill-exercised Thoroughbreds and found that the elevation in oxidative markers was lower in the HRW trial than in the placebo trial.[11] The 2015 Yamazaki study in Scientific Reports gave intravenous H₂-saline to 13 Thoroughbreds before a high-intensity simulated race and found significantly suppressed oxidative stress immediately, 3 hours, and 24 hours after the race.[12]
Neither of these is a household-pet study. But the consistency of the signal — across species, across delivery methods, across research groups — is part of why the human and animal H₂ fields have continued to grow. Hydrogen-rich water has also been incorporated into wellness protocols for animals in veterinary practices in Japan and South Korea for years, and the broader veterinary community is now starting to publish on the topic.
The rodent foundation
Most of the foundational H₂ mechanism work — including Ohsawa 2007[1] — was done in rats and mice. Safety profile: why the dose chart looks the way it does
